Differentology Video….. Good or Bad?

Bunji-Garlin-2-2011

I started writing this article having watched Bunji’s video for Differentology once. They say first impressions last and my first impression of this video was somewhat negative to say the least. I discussed the video with peers and they had similar feelings. ” What Garlin try dey?” one exclaimed. Another said ” He gone outside the box but too far I feel” and my favorite ” Dan he tryna make Lil Bits feel better bout she video awa?”

I wrote three paragraphs semi dealing with Bunji until I started describing the video for intended readers. This is where I encountered the “problem”. The problem I was having is which part of the video I didn’t like. I decided to take a second, third and fourth look at the video. The visuals were very strong in my opinion, the concept was unique and the abstract and non abstract elements of Carnival were included. This combination does not necessarily ensure or guarantee that the video would be a good fit for the song but it at least shows an attempt to put out a quality product. After watching the video again and again I got a sense of real artistic adventure with an attempt to set itself aside from any other video in the market space.

This abstract way of telling the carnival story that we as Trinidadians are so familiar with left many disappointed, just look at the many of the comments left on the video’s YouTube page. They envisioned more for the song I guess. At first, I myself was a bit taken aback by the unusualness of the video, but watching it more and more it gradually grew on me as a great artistic effort.

Admittedly more could of been done to fulfill the direction in which they wanted to go, all in all though, it was very astute effort. Instead of doing the old run of the mill soca video, Bunji and his team ventured down a risky path and I for one am glad they tried. At the end of the day, good or bad we can all agree that this video does the exact thing the song does, it puts you in a different state of mind ……a state of Differentology.
