Already police officers are welcoming the suggestion.

The Police Social and Welfare Association is agreeing with Justice Archie.

General Secretary Michael Seales says in other jurisdictions persons found in possession of marijuana sticks are either cautioned or ticketed by the police.

He says this would allow officers to focus on “hardcore crimes” instead of being in court for such a simple offense.

On the flip side…

Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan says marijuana is also used for medicinal purposes and decriminalizing small amounts must come under the guidance of a specific medical practitioner.

The Director of the National Alocohol and Drug Abuse prevention programme, Wendy Wattie tells us there is need for research and public discussions before marijuana can be decriminalized.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar has already stated her views, saying possession of marijuana is illegal in this country and persons who break the law should be dealt with.
